Witty, Poigniant, and Whacked- Memorable lines of the Series

I thought I'd start a thread to discuss those little phrases that stick in our mind for whatever reason. One that's stuck with me is from S1 I think, when the new tax inspector come to town, the inspector is talking to Robin and he says (not exact quote), "I'm a book keeper. The age of the hero has passed, it is now the age of the book keeper." And I thought, he's right. There is a deficiency in "heroes". Book keepers do make the world go round now, have most power and control. It made me a little sad in my heart; inner child curled up in fetal position, pouted and furrowed her brow.
Of course last week's "It's not like I asked for ice and a slice" was so anachronistic and so deliciously Allan. I've been missing witty and distinct dialogue from the gang.
What are your memorable lines?

I know what you mean lexie.
One of my favorites is out of S1 : "The Assassin", (in the UK), and "Tatoo? What Tatoo?...." (in the US, why they did that I'll never know).
Robin has just robbed everyone at the party celebrating King Richard's birthday at Locksley Manor. As Guy gallops off in pursuit of Robin with Guy's engagement ring he gave to Marian, the Sheriff stands beside Marian as he has just arrived at the gathering, and says, "Oh, your parties are much more fun than mine".
Just cracked me up!!
Good info has it that they had to film several takes of that scene as Lucy kept on laughing out loud at Keith Allen's improvisations, (like THAT little jewel!).
KA was THE performance out of the ENTIRE RH series.
Pokeygirl I agree, some of the witty repartee has all but disappeared from S3. (Along with a lot of the fun. But at least as we get closer to the end, it starts to make a nice entrance once again, for old times sake?...LOL)

The Sheriff definitely had some of the best lines!
One of my favorites, in Brothers in Arms:
Guy: My sergeant died an innocent man. Sheriff: Oh come now, I'm sure he was guilty of something.
Talk about whacked. And so deliciously, too.
Also the Sheriff, in The Taxman Cometh, in response to the fake Abbess complaining about Nottingham being a godless place under his stewardship: "In fact, I would hate to be godlessness-less." LOL!
Great Marian line in the same episode: "Gisborne sniffs around me like a little spaniel." Mwahaha. That just conjures up such hilarious images...
In the "poignant" department ... Guy's line to Sir Jasper about Marian, in Walkabout, takes the top prize for me: "And without her, my world might as well turn to ash."
From Treasure of the Nation:
Marian: But is it such a crime to follow one's heart? Guy: Oh, the way that I followed mine? And always to your door.
And of course, from Guy: "Stay -- and make this place bearable."

Poignant Guy moments--this series was full of them. The ones you quoted make me want to cry!
I liked S3 ep.2---- Robin to Guy in the dungeon "You can kill me a hundred times over, but the pain you're feeling now, the hatred, the self-loathing, is never going away. You'll never hate me as much as you hate yourself." Wonderful moment between these two sworn enemies, but it lays the groundwork for things to come.

I really can't remember when they said these lines, but they will forever stay with me. I tend to use them at work ever so often.
Sheriff: La de da de da........
Robin: Will you stand for this intolerance? I for one, WILL NOT! This has to be one of the classic Robin lines....imho. I actually HAVE used this at work, lol!
You all are so great at remembering which episode.
Thanks lexi for this thread!

Ah....one of my favorite is from season 2 epi 'Show Me the Money' when Marian gets caught and strung up in the gangs booby-trap. Shes screaming " ROBIN!!!!!!!!!!! Get me down!!" He continues to tell her how good she looks up there, and how she looks gorgeous from any angle. When he finally lets her down, she rushes him and sucker punches him and says " How do I look from that angle??" I guess sometimes love hurts. =)

Being a RH/Marian girl - you'd think I'd go for something between them but I loved Will when he finally declared his love for Djag... So sweet
I loved "I was concussed" when Robin accidently declares (after the fight with Allan S2) his love for Marian and she calls him on it. Funny and sweet
I love "La Dee Da Dee Daaaaaa...." I frequently say this at work when management is boring or annoying me.
I agree Allan is great with the one liners such as "I'm good with Nuns..." and he delivers them so "seriously"
I thought for summing up a plethora of feelings... Robin in S1 when he says (referring to Gisborne during the wedding), "he is stealing my life". He'd stolen his title, his position, his village/home and was about to steal his soul mate. At that point, it never dawned on me that Robin's losses would get even worse.
Moment - no words needed - Ep1 S3 - Gizzie throwing off the cape at Hangman's crossing. Cracks me up just to visualize it.

How about a few favorite lines from upcoming episodes, for those of us who have watched?
These are teasers for those who haven't watched but are simply dying of curiosity! I won't say who said them, or to whom---to keep you guessing. If you DON'T want to know ANYTHING, DON"T READ THE FOLLOWING:
"Is your life really so empty that you don't care whether you live or die?"
"There must be some good in you yet."
"For once, I agree with Gisborne."
"I always quite liked you."
"I have better things to do with my day."
" Look---I really have no desire to see you again."
"To York?"
"I'm not sure if I trust you yet, but we're about to find out."
"Kill me. Put me out of me misery....you didn't bring any food, did ya?"
"Don't argue with me!"
"He stole my horse."
"So, where do I sleep, then?"
All from my three favorite episodes of S3!

Hi, lexi.............here are some past threads dealing with our favorite lines:
Favorite lines, Part 2 - pg. 19 Favorite "throw away" lines - pg. 28 Favorite "moments" - pg. 28
There was an oringinal "Favorite Lines" thread, but I didn't go all the way back through the threads to find it.
It's fun to go back and reread all these great lines and moments from the show. There are so many, and a big reason while this show is so enjoyable !!!

I still think the funniest was in S1/Ep 10 Peace, Off when Prince Malik made this comment about Allan: "This is what happens when cousins marry." It was a throw-away line that many folks didn't hear.
So far in S3, it was nice to see Robin show his cheeky side when he said: "I'm Robin Hood, the pleasure's all yours."

Ah I just watched Booby and the Beast yesterday.
My favorite from Guy was "Marian...who'd have thought?" in just the nastiest tone. "Fetch" is a close second from that episode.

Yes, those are some of my favorites. In fact booby and the beast is one of my favorites episodes!
Also, loved Guy's comeback at Marian in the carriage on the way to the ship to Acre when she realized he HAD lied about being in the Holy Land..."what feel betrayed?!"
oh and for that matter same scene, when Sheriff referred to Guy as "Gizzy".

Hi Lexiconia, what a great idea asking for memorable lines. I think one of my favorites was in Season one, Tatoo? What Tatoo? : Robin and Guy are fighting in the woods and Robin was telling Guy what he went to battle for and Guy respondes with: "Are you know Lockesly, Lord of the Dance?"

A couple of other classics from S1: Turk Flu - Robin - "Does anyone smell burning?" (after setting the mine on fire) Robin -" Never forget the outlaws!" (in response to the Sheriff who says "put the fire out/forget the outlaws." Who Shot the Sheriff? - Vaisey - "This is just pillow talk" (to Robin when they are talking about the plan to catch the killer) Vaisey - Why can't it ever be a beautiful woman? (when Robin wakes him up.)

Much's entire Khalilah speech to Robin.
"I love you, but I hate you too." and the bit about freeing him but still treating him like a servant was just wrenching. It's so blatantly speaking from the heart then. I can't imagine what it took for Much to say those things to Robin at all, but honestly I was cheering for him and so sad for him at the same time. Those were painful admissions, but Robin deserved to hear them. It's too bad he didn't take them more to heart, and went right back to treating Much the way he always had.
I understand that it would be difficult for Robin to see Much as an equal after so long viewing him as a servant, but I would expect someone who has such an intense need to see justice done to broaden his view to include those close to him as well.
Also (SPOILER!!!!!!!!)
Something to this effect: -What about all the people who are going to die because of what you did? -What about all the people who are going to die because they followed Robin Hood?

I've loved Keith Allen's "Well, La de da de da ! ! ! from the first one he said - had me laughing, and I laughed every time he said it, because he always delivered that line with such sarcasm, and whatever else he put into it.
Yeah, I was busting up when Marian punched Robin in the stomach, HARD ! ! That line was priceless ! !
I giggled every time the preview, then the episode, had that scene "I'm Robin Hood, the pleasures all yours."
What exactly DOES "concussed" mean ?? I strained both times (origingal run and rerun) to tell what Robin was saying because of Jonas' thick irish / Britsh accent and fast talking, AND replayed the DVD a number of times just to make sure I heard it right.
Then I tried looking the word up in the dictionary, but it's not in there. I think I have the general idea, but would lke to know the definition.

I love dictionaries: to concuss - to cause a concussion (an injury to the brain that can cause temporary disorientation, memory loss, or unconsciousness ), usually by a blow to the head or a jarring fall or jolt. For Robin, it meant he was saying he must have been out of his senses to admit to Marian that he loved her. Such a dear fellow, he is. Marian loved him nonetheless.

I guess KA had them all laughing - he apparently is known for his improvization. I recall that interveiw of RA telling of never knowing what he would find when walking onto a set with KA involved.
There are some American actors who also always throw their fellow actors off-guard because of constant improvizations (unless the other actors are good at improv themselves - then sometimes the director will just keep going to capture those memorable scenes)

From Tattoo? What Tattoo commentaries:
Sam Troughton- "Don't give Keith a prop, he'll lick it."
I saw an outtake once between RA and KA that eventually had poor RA jumping out of the chair he was in with a distinctly girly yelp because KA got extremely close to licking him. Guess the tongue thing didn't just cover props.

I've been trying to find it again for ages, and I think I did, but it's on a BBC iPlayer, and of course I can't view it here in the US.
Guy moves fast when in trouble, RA moves faster when in danger of being tongue molested. The yelp sounds like it came completely from someone else.

Makes you wonder how RA kept a straight face in that scene with Prince John, when he appeared in serious danger of being kissed! Do you suppose he had to dodge quickly out of the way again? Poor man! I couldn't have someone that close to my face without busting up laughing!

I think that clip was on the DVD's- maybe the Special Features disc. I saw that one, too - RA DID move pretty fast. I heard a sound, but didn't know it came from RA.

If it is on the special features I will be a happy camper. I never saw it on there, but I admit, I sort of skipped through it all after Dom Minghella's ridiculous justifications of Marian's death. I'll have to go back and look.

Thought of more, from S1, I believe the second episode Djaq's in- Much: What do girls eat anyway? Djaq: Special girls food.
I'm glad some of you mentioned "Fetch!"- quintessetial Guy.
***Spoiler line***
Of course, "To York" But Meg's "You know, I always rather liked you" to Guy broke my heart and was so funny in a tragic way.

Apparently there was one line that RA said that we never heard - Gordon referred to it in the commentary for Parenthood. As each and everyone passes by RA on their way to the gallows, he says, sotto voce, "Good morning" quite cheerfully. They all had trouble trying to keep a straight face!

I heard that commentary also on "Parenthood". Then I went back to rewatch the scene and just started cracking up myself, imagining hearing it!

I look for this in that scene, to see if Gordon Kennedy really is cracking up as he says. I can picture Guy being just perverse enough to do it, giving everyone about to hang a polite "Good morning." As Richard said, it's just a regular day for Gisborne and the Sheriff, no need to let the courtesies slide.
I love the commentaries.

How true, how true, MM.
But like the discussion about guilt between Guy and Robin, the heart break will pave the way for SO much beauty and eternal happiness. to follow.
(As Marian celebrates in the clouds.)
Pokeygirl This thread is such an exquisite reminder of the excellent cast, the effort of the writers to not only entertain but deeply move us at the same time, and the ability of the actors to bring to life these legendary people and make them so beautifully human. Its why we've watched them so faithfully and followed them into adventure, celebration, mourning, and the hard won and costly victory.
SPOILER HERE.....................
Baby brother Archer certainly has the family gift of getting his point across with style and wit to out do BOTH of his brothers!

There are too many of my fav to type them all! I love all of the ones yall have put on here. They bring back such happy memories.
One of my favorites was from Much, "Its not fair, I love you, and no one gives me any food. Yet people who do not love you are fed.........Ive changed my mind..I no longer love you. Now can i eat?"
And one from Allan(the black powder episode i cant remember what its called) "A few of those, you could take out the whole town. Hello villagers, cant pay your taxes? Boom! You're out!"
And the whole euphemism scene. that still cracks me up ~Shell

SPOILER ALERT! BEWARE!
Yes, Meg---her "crush" on Guy, who she had apparently seen from a distance and knew about, but had never met, and her innocent belief that he had a good side under all the badness---she saw the good in him, like Marian once did. "She made me a better man", he said of Marian. Well, Meg did, too. Her willingness to see past his bad, sad history to the man he was within got him right in his vulnerable heart, didn't it? Made the ending so tragic! Come on, even the Guy haters can't hate him quite so much after this!

Meg is Marian's "angel".
The one she sent to complete her mission to save her former fiance, and "brother-in-law".
with her husband providing the "road map", and bringing up the rear.(LOL)

I know Jules,
It would have made such a deliciously complicated and rich, familial story line if the writers had been allowed to go their "other chosen" road.
But alas, the Network Execs demanded immediate profits/ratings and ordered it differently. (Unfortunately for the investors involved, AND the viewers, they wound up "ordering" themselves right off the air.)
Marian certainly knew ALL of her men, had "qualities". The kind that made her love them differently, but with ALL her heart.

Thanks nrs,
THE classic "Allan line". Every character has their "signature" line, and THAT was his!
Like Allan himself, simply unforgettable.
Come to think of it folks,
how about the one signature lines for all of our cast?
Anyone want to start off? (or perhaps start another thread for this one? Just a thought.

I was watching Angel of Death yesterday and realized I had never paid an incredible amount of attention to Will. Too caught up in the leather, I guess. But I gained an appreciation for him during that episode.
He was just honest. I miss Djac's gentle sense as well. Sometimes subtlety is the best way to go.
I miss the old Allan, too. One or two instances of his great gift for the con are simply not enough.
I'm still wound up in the Guy story arc, but I'm missing the soft touch they used to use on this show about a lot of things. Once in awhile someone made an overlong and tedious speech about the poor, but shrewishness and pomposity was never the way to make the point, as it seems to be now. Kate is going to continue to screech like a fishwife and Tuck is going to make more patronizing speeches.
*sigh*

I liked Guy's comment to Marian in S1 Ep. 6 "The Tax Man Cometh."
"My mother used to say if you've wronged somebody, or if they're upset, do not be proud, offer them friendship. If they reject you, offer a second time, and a third, until they accept."
"I will keep giving."
It's such an interesting line, coming from Guy.

It's always sad to think that everyone, even the most heinous criminals, started out as innocent children. I do believe that there are some "mis-wired" individuals who come into the world with a propensity for evil, but by far most are shaped (or warped) by their life experiences. Although people are ultimately reponsible for their actions (unless they are mentally ill), there is often a sad history there.
I've always thought of Guy's black leather, besides the obvious reference to black/bad guy cliche.....as a metaphor for the impenetrable cover he put around his heart to protect him from being hurt. While it may be a "shield" of sorts, it is uncomfortable....it does not breathe or let in light or air. It chafes.......his body (calm down Team Leather) and his heart.
Perhaps putting him in somewhat different outfits this season (although always black) is another demonstration of the cracks appearing in his hard shell.

I had stated previously that what I miss most about this season, are the quiet moments we used to have between Robin and the gang. Those are the moments that helped endear them all to us and also developed their characters and made us care about them. Remember when Will's dad died and he built that great light box thing? When they were all together like that, they were a family. All that is gone. Kate and Tuck have never been integrated into the family. Robin has his head up his derriere. The boys are bickering. LJ is just there. Instead of adjusting as time goes by, I am missing Will and Djag and Marian more. With them, went the heart and soul of the show.

Yep, simn,
when you perform such radical surgery, you must assume some risk.
These folks did not intend to leave the "project" lying on the table, but were prepared to infuse new life and new organs into their "patient". However, I think it bears mentioning, they would not have had to do this in the first place, if they had but followed their best "road map" and stuck to their original course, IOW(in other words), IGNORED the network "suits" and said ratings be darned, we're doing it OUR way, (thank you very much!).
At least we will finally get a reminder of past intimate glories as we come (or more appropriately rush), to the conclusion. But I must say, when we finally get a glimpse of our figurative "Emerald City", its that more beautiful and precious because of the difficult journey to get there.
Pokeygirl Our little fine feathered friend and RH BC mascot, didn't mind the storms he had to endure, as long as he got there, no? Indeed, there are ALWAYS possibilities.

I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet - but there was an episode I think season one - where someone was trying to assassinate the sheriff and thought he had shot him with an arrow before the sheriff's men shot him and as he lay dying he yelled - " I shot the sheriff - I shot the sheriff ' - then Keith Allen steps into the frame - and says ' No you shot the deputy" - a play on the Bob Marley song " I shot the sheriff but I did not shoot the deputy " I love when they make a play on 20/21 st century issues.

Welcome, Wheymore! Yes, RH is connected to the wide, wide world by so many degrees of separation. Campy one liners and music are just some of the ways we relate to this medieval legendary tale. Glad you are here for the final countdown to the end of the story. Have fun on the forum!
